Well Done Everyone!
Eleven local area Rotary Technology Tournaments were held this year all over Rotary District 1040 (West and North Yorkshire) with schools entering teams in age groupings: basic, intermediate and advanced. Over 1000 youngsters took part and had a stimulating, enjoyable and testing, but fun day out. See 2010 Event page (tab on left) for details of the task they were set. The teams had to document their ideas, designs, test results and so on, in a ‘portfolio'. The team's efforts were judged by a panel of Rotarians and Industrialists with backgrounds in engineering, technology, enterprise and education.
For the District Final, the working models and supporting portfolios of the winning Advanced Group teams were collected up at the end of each Tournament, and then subjected to further scrutiny by three judges on 8th April at the Crown Hotel in Harrogate. No students were required to be involved in this ‘Final' stage of the competition.
Roundhay School Technology College was declared the winner, with the two runners up being Richmond School (Rotary North Group - Catterick Event) and Lady Lumley's School, Pickering (York Group Event).

Continuing Professional Development for teachers is being undertaken by Education Leeds using The Technology Tournament as the basis.
After the 2009 Event, a School Group was set up with Advisors from Rotary.
A teacher's learning pack is under advanced development. The Rotary Technology Tournament Chief and Advanced Task Judges were involved in assessing the pilot stage at the South Leeds Learning Centre. Four teams were involved (two basic and one each at intermediate and advanced) and a basic team won the event - well done to them! The progress on the development was covered in a teachers CPD session at the 2010 Tournament by Christine Marsden (Education Leeds) and Adrian Blanshard (Morley School).
We in Rotary greatly applaud this development as one of the key aims is to stimulate enterprise in all schools.
The Event will be repeated on 8th March 2011, same venue.
