2008 Event
The Task was based on designing and building a bridge across an estuary. Part of roadway had to be raised using a controlling device that had to be part of The design. When raised, the clearance had to be sufficient to allow the passage of a "tall ship" (HMS Rotary). This portion had to be lowered. The bridge had to strong enough to allow a 1kg weight to be dragged across both before and after raising.
The clearance of the unraised bridge had to be such that a barge could pass underneath at all times.
The Basic task required just one spar to be raised.
The Intermediate task required two to be raised but a central support was available "mid-stream".
The Advanced task also required both spars to be raised but no central support was available.
