2007

This was our first time and we thank the Yorkshire Post for the free use of their premises

The task:

Engineers, working on pipelines, need a machine to crawl inside the pipeline to check that all is well or to clear any blockages.

The challenge for the Foundation Teams was to design and build a vehicle, powered, by an electric motor, to travel along the inside of the test pipeline in the shortest possible time clearing a known amount of rubble. A switch, to start and stop the device, was also required.

The Intermediate challenge was to design and build a vehicle, powered by an electric motor, to travel quickly along the inside of the test pipeline avoiding obstacles and debris.

The advanced task required more control with reverse and more obstacles to avoid

To see the progress of the vehicle, the "top" was removed from the pipeline. The vehicle had be started at a white line and was timed to passing the line at the other end, having passed through the tunnel.
